After a long, hot summer, hockey is back and the Nottingham Lions are Lancashire-bound today as they prepare take-on Blackburn Eagles at Blackburn Ice Arena (5.45pm) in their first game of the all-new NIHL Laidler Conference.

Joe Wightman faces off against the Eagles during one of last season’s encounters at Blackburn Arena.

Matt Bradbury’s men claimed all four points available from their two visits to Blackburn Ice Arena last season, scoring twenty goals in the process and they will be hoping for more of the same this time around to get their 2013/14 season off to a positive start.

Despite last season’s impressive scorelines against the Eagles, Nottingham will be taking nothing for granted, as the make-up of the new Blackburn squad is largely unknown with little news coming out of their camp since last March, aside from the departure of captain Ken Armstrong to local rivals Widnes Wild.

No fewer than four new signings should be making their official Lions debuts this evening including the likes of Neil Adams, Robert Perks and Connor McNaughton, all of whom signed from Solihull Barons over the summer.

Don’t forget, if you can’t make the journey north to cheer the boys on today, you can keep up-to-speed with all the goal action by following our official twitter feed for live updates from the game from 5.45pm this evening.

Today’s other Laidler Conference game sees Hull Stingrays host Deeside Dragons (5pm).
