The Nottingham Lions are delighted to announce the re-signing of veteran captain Luke Thomas for their upcoming NIHL Laidler D2 campaign.

The 28-year-old will be beginning his seventh season as a Lion and has enjoyed a prosperous career, split between Nottingham and his hometown club Solihull Barons.

Bringing twelve years of senior level experience to the ice and locker room, the defenceman has enjoyed many successes during seasons past, including a career high 25 points during the Lions’ 2012/13 championship winning campaign.

The Solihull native took time to answer a few questions for nottinghamlions.co.uk:

What’s the biggest challenge you will face as captain this coming season?

“It's my third season as captain, so the senior guys know what to expect and know how I like things to run. This season will see a lot of juniors and first year seniors stepping up, so I think the biggest challenge will be working with the younger guys to get them used to the senior set up and helping them with the transition to senior hockey. However, I fully trust the other senior guys on the team on helping out with this. Ben Wood showed great leadership qualities last season and I know he will be there right next to me again to take away some of that pressure.”

You’ve enjoyed six seasons as a Lion, what brings you back to the city?

“Nottingham are a great club and a place that I've wanted to play since I was a kid. Even though Solihull is my home town club, I've now made more senior appearances in the Lions colours. Working alongside Matt Bradbury has been a pleasure; he puts a lot of trust in me and fully involves me with the decisions that need to be made throughout the season. The management team make me feel wanted and so the decision to come back year on year is made easier. I fully intend on staying here until I retire.”

What are you most looking forward to during this coming campaign?

“I think it will be the chance to work with some very talented and promising youngsters that are coming up through the junior and academy ranks. We are very much still in a transitional period and still have a long way to go to get back to the heights of Lions teams in the past. However, what the coaching team are building is a very exciting future and we may just start to see the rewards this season.”

Peter and Tracey Cowan will sponsor Luke for the third season running and once again, he would like to thank them for their continued support, as his personal sponsorship allows the stay-at-home d-man’s mind to focus purely on on-ice matters.

The blue line veteran is the first signing of the pre-season and coupled with the announcement of new main team sponsor ‘Solutions For Accounting’, it’s safe to say the road to September’s new campaign has begun with bang!

Keep checking back at nottinghamlions.co.uk in the coming days for more exciting player announcements, with some fresh faces due to arrive at the National Ice Centre in the very near future.
