The Nottingham Lions have returned to the bottom of the Moralee League after a 15-0 and 7-5 defeat to the Solway Sharks and the Deeside Dragons respectively.
A shortened team of 13 skaters made the trip up to Scotland on Saturday night for a perfectly clean game of hockey, with neither side taking any penalties at all in the entire sixty minutes. Solway opened the scoring at 7:46 and continued to find the net past Lions netminder Miles Dallison until 59:46 when Ross Murray scored the home side’s fifteenth and final of the evening.
END OF THE GAME: SOLWAY SHARKS 15 – 0 NOTTINGHAM LIONS
Then on Sunday another long trip to North Wales was in store for the Lions as they faced a crucial bottom of the table clash with the Deeside Dragons. It was always on the cards that this was going to be a fierce and physical affair between the two sides with so much to play for and Deeside racked up 57 penalty minutes over the course of the game. They took the lead at 4:25 before two powerplay goals for the Lions at 8:39 and 9:56 gave them the one goal advantage. Joe Aston got the first from the assists of Pywell and Gretton before Gretton himself got the second from the assists of Stanley and Andrews.
Deeside tied the game up at 18:58 and then took the lead at 24:33 before Ruskin Hughes put the Lions back on level terms with four minutes of the second period remaining. They couldn’t take the tie game into the break though as Deeside scored shorthanded with ten seconds of the second period remaining. They went 5-3 in front two and a half minutes into the third period before Jake Fisher got the Lions back within one twenty seconds later from the assists of Pywell and Aston. Another shorthanded goal at 49:21 put Deeside back in front by two goals and the Lions looked to be heading for another defeat. Cameron Pywell reduced the deficit to a single goal again from Levers and Andrews at 54:35 but with exactly 5 minutes to go Deeside wrapped up their 7-5 victory to set the Lions back to the bottom of the table.
END OF THE GAME: DEESIDE DRAGONS 7 – 5 NOTTINGHAM LIONS
