The Lions are pleased to announce the signing of 22 year old GB women's netminder Samantha Bolwell.
Head Coach Matt Bradbury was pleased with the signing and enlightened us how all this had come about.
"I managed to speak to Leves (Alan Levers) who agreed to get back between the pipes and it was key to find additional suitable cover for Hovey who had just picked up a knock. So I got in touch with Nathan Craze who runs his Netminding Academy at the NIC on aWednesday evening and asked if he could recommend anybody. Myself and Nathan kicked a few ideas around before he recommended Sam to us and after a couple of times on the ice with the team it was a no brainer."
"Sam currently plays for the Sheffield Shadows Women's Elite League team and they are her first priority as well as any international camps or world championship call ups. Sam has also had previous experience in the NIHL with Streatham Redskins."
"Over recent weeks we have had a host of talented female players on the ice working with the team including Jessica Urquhart and junior netminders Holly Steeples and Mollie Brooks. This is great for the girls to really assist in pushing their skill development."
"Many years ago I remember being on the coaching staff with the GB women's team in 2000 at the World Championships in Hungary and many of the women were playing in the under 19's men teams."
"I coached both Michelle and Cheryl (Smith) the current GB Women Head Coaches in Sheffield at the old Queens Road rink and could see how much it improved their game both mentally and physically and when they transitioned back into the women's game they just dominated."
"Sam is a good netminder and is only going to get better training and playing in the team. She works hard in practice, she isn't fazed by anything that's thrown in her direction and you can really see her enjoying the game."
"With Nicole (Jackson) playing out of Bradford and Widnes the previous season things are looking good for the women's national team as Sam and Nicole are sure to inspire the next generation of female netminders."
Sam can next be seen in action on Sunday night when the Lions take on Blackburn Eagles at the National Ice Centre face off 7.30pm.
