The Nottingham Lions are pleased to officially announce the signing of 24 year-old winger Stephen Breisner, for the rest of the 2013/14 season.
The Oxford-born forward has already impressed in the Lions’ previous two games and brings with him two years experience of playing senior European hockey in Sweden.
Nottingham Head Coach Matt Bradbury was able to snap up the Loughborough University student after spotting him at the recently held trials for next month’s 2013 FISU World University Games in Trentino, Italy, where Bradbury will be coaching Team GB.
Breisner played his junior hockey with Oxford and Swindon, before getting his first taste of the senior game during the 2007/08 season with Bracknell Hornets.
Thanks to links with his Swedish father, Stephen then went on to study and work in Sweden, playing for two years with the Lund Giants, where he became a mainstay in the team during the 2008/09 season.
Speaking to nottinghamlions.co.uk this week, the workman-like forward was clearly delighted to be once again putting his skills to good use on the ice, saying;
“It’s been a while since I last played so I’m just to trying to get back into it and to contribute to the team wherever I can – I’m a hard-working player, I’m strong on the forecheck and am good at forcing turnovers.”
“I know the team were league champions last year so I want to help repeat that this season.”
Coach Bradbury was also pleased to be able to add Breisner to the Lions roster, adding;
“It’s always good to have extra competition and cover for players not available due to injury or other commitments so it was a no brainer really. His game is improving all the time and he featured for a period against Deeside at home.”
“He also played last weekend in Widnes and really had an impact throughout the game with his forechecking and penalty killing too, linking up well with his team mates.”
“Whilst not the heaviest of guys he’s definitely one of the fittest and his skating and effort is second to none and this really fits in with the Lions style of play.”
