The Lions suffered a narrow defeat in their first game of the 2014/15 NIHL Laidler D2 season, at Blackburn Arena on Saturday evening.

It also proved to be a double disappointment for Matt Bradbury's side, as Nottingham lost out on a potential four-point haul, with the game being contested for double points.

Tom Hovell was given the nod ahead of Warren Gilfoyle as startng netminder, whilst the Lions were able to give debuts to Sam Adcock, Rob McDonald, Conor Gordon and Latvian forward Ivo Dimitrijevs.

Ben Wood, Ben Foster-Wilson, Sam Illsley and Reece Glossop were all missing from the line-up.

In an even, end-to-end contest the Lions drew first blood on the powerplay after 17 minutes, with Dimitijevs scoring on his debut from a Gordon assist.

Less than 30 seconds later, the Eagles were back level courtesy of a Daniel Jones strike.

The two sides still could not be separated at the end of the second period, with Jordan Ashington's power play goal putting Blackburn ahead in the opening minute before Connor Glossop equalised for the Lions, five minutes later.

The Eagles then snatched all four points with 2:30 left on the clock in the final period, via a shot from their player/coach Scott Barnett.

Matt Bradbury's men now look to re-group, as they face a double-header this coming weekend - travelling to Bradford Bulldogs on Saturday 13th September (4:45pm) before hosting local rivals Sheffield Senators at the National Ice Centre, on Sunday 14th (7.30pm). Ticket details are available here.
