Telford Titans 2 Nottingham Lions 3

Nottingham Lions 1 Billingham Stars 7

A difficult weekend for the Lions saw them come out with two points from a possible four, beating Telford Titans on their home ice on Saturday night before succumbing to the Billingham Stars’ strength in-depth at the NIC on Sunday night.

Nottingham travelled to Telford eager to gain two points after losing 7-2 to the Titans at the NIC back in October. A physical encounter saw them emerge victorious – Michael Rose scoring in the first period before two unanswered third period goals via Ben Wood and a second for Michael Rose meant the Lions came away with a deserved win.

The Billingham Stars returned to Lace City on Sunday eager to avenge their unexpected home defeat at the hands of the Lions last weekend. Nottingham were missing captain Chris Colegate and Christy Johnson-Brown, who both picked up injuries the previous night.

A shakey start for the home side saw them a goal down inside the first two minutes thanks to Scott Ward’s effort (01.28). The Lions then found their feet and gradually got into the game despite being on the end of some big checks from a sprightly Stars side.

The Lions grabbed an equaliser from Gareth O’Flaherty after some good work behind the net from Joe Wightman and Nick Whyatt (26.33). But the visitors were soon back in front after a marvellous effort from James Moss (29.14) and then Adam Robinson who put Billingham 3-1 up at the end of the second (33.53).

Nottingham seemed to run out of steam in the third as the Stars’ four lines ran riot, scoring four more goals via Paul Windridge (51.04), a second for Adam Robinson (52.52), James Udell (53.28) and Michael Elder scoring the only goal past replacement netminder Sam Gospel on the powerplay (59.40).

Post-game interviews with Lions’ Matt Bradbury and Nick Whyatt can now be found on Lions TV along with Billingham Stars’ Assistant Coach Stephen Foster and man of the match Adam Robinson.

The Lions’ attention now turns to a tricky away trip up to Whitley Bay to take on the Warriors next Sunday.
