Chalke says ‘cheese’ – Martin with Lions GM Danny Harrison.

The twenty-five year-old Welshman is the third goalie to sign for the Lions this summer, following on from the re-signing of Alan Levers and Tom Hovell last month.

The Cardiff-born custodian had previously played with his home town rec team – Cardiff Ice Hounds and having recently moved up to Lace City, he is sure to provide more strong competition for the starting netminder place as the new season gets underway.

Head Coach Matt Bradbury spoke to nottinghamlions.co.uk this week and is clearly pleased to have Martin on board; saying,

“We weren’t aware of ‘Chalkie’ until we found out he was literally living in the doorstep of the National Ice Centre – he is a level headed guy, great to have around the team and he’s got a great mentor in ‘Leves’ to work with and learn from. At the same time I’m sure he’ll be doing everything he can to push ‘Hovey’ and keep him on his toes too.”

“It’s good to have competition all over the ice and to have competition for nets is even better as it will mean the starting netminder will need to come to play every night.”

Martin also spoke to nottinghamlions.co.uk this week and added;

“Since moving to Nottingham from Cardiff, I was looking around at a few clubs in Nottingham but I guess I was in the right place at the right time, got spotted and started training with the Lions, they sat me down a few weeks later and offered me a spot on the team - I also believe that I’m the only Welsh player in the group, so I’m gearing myself up for a bit of stick this season!”

“As a goalie I’m still learning my trade but I like to think I’m a hard working player who gives 110% whether it be in training or come game time - my main target would be to start a game, which would make it my first semi-pro start of my career, then from there on just help give the boys the best chance to win every night.”

As for the team’s ambitions, Chalke is clear of what is expected of the squad this season, adding;

“Obviously the Lions won the league last season but the new league structure is going to be even more competitive this year, so we need to be looking at retaining league success or at least competing up at the top of the table.”

Martin would like to thank his own personal sponsors Boards Direct and MTConstruction for their support for the forthcoming season.

Nottingham’s season begins on Saturday 7th September with a trip to Blackburn Eagles (5.45pm face off) before taking on local-rivals Solihull Barons at the NIC on Sunday 15th September (7.30pm). Ticket details are available here.
