The Nottingham Lions are pleased to announce the return of a familiar face to take on the role of head coach of the lions for the 2011-2012 season, Matt Bradbury.
Along side Matt this season are assistant coaches Paul Glossop and Simon Hopkins and new General Manager Danny Harrison.
On his return Matt had this to say,
“I am really excited to be back with the Lions after 9 seasons away!
I have not been out of hockey as I have other ventures with the GB Universities Mens Team having been to two World Student Games in Torino, Italy 2007 and Harbin, China 2009. As well as representing my nation with close friend and colleague Mike Urquhart (Nottingham Junior Club Head Coach) I have also been working with the Nottingham Junior Club with the 16’s B, the 18’s A last season winning the league and also runners up in the play offs losing out to Sheffield in overtime in the final.
Time away from regular senior hockey has allowed me the opportunity to learn more about myself and also to work with a very dedicated and committed back room staff. Hence my decision to install Paul Glossop and Simon Hopkins as my two main assistant coaches this season. Having known and worked with “Gloss” over a number of seasons as well him being my “best mate” (we do have our debates however it is only for the good of the team that’s for sure). We learn off each other all the time and really do enjoy our hockey. Simon is a guy I have worked with within the GB Universities set up and again has a huge amount to learn about senior hockey, but he has many attributes that will compliment the team and coach/management staff as a whole.
Last but by no means least we have Danny Harrison who will be taking on the role as General Manager of the squad. This is a big ask and he is such a committed character that without question will not let anything stand in the way of the teams progression and future success.
We are obviously volunteer coach/management team – however that does not detract from the efforts and commitment we deliver and what we expect of the team and individual players. We are close knit unit that is a must when going through some difficult and challenging times ahead – as Danny says “bring it on!”
Our two main objectives this year:-
- We are going to be in for a big challenge this season with the rising costs for the older players (offsetting living costs against continuing playing ice hockey) and also ensuring that the team survives in the ENL Northern A League.
- To bring the Lions back closer to the NJIHC as they have been way out on a limb for a considerable amount of time – we want our Junior players to aim high and want to play for the Lions and believe that one day they can fulfil this achievement.
We have pulled together a squad of experience and inexperience – we have managed to keep some experience on board (and we welcome those “old timers” back which is key to the success of the team, we have also reintroduced some local Nottingham talent that have recently played their hockey out of town, players that are pursuing their education in Nottingham and guys that are coming through the junior ranks which gives Nottingham players of the future something to aim for as they progress their hockey careers. We have a good bunch of lads and there is a real unified feeling in the camp. Here’s to a successful and productive 2011-12 season.”
