The Nottingham Lions welcome league newcomers Widnes Wild to the National Ice Centre on Sunday evening (7.30pm), fresh on the back of two impressive victories over Midlands rivals Coventry Blaze and Solihull Barons.
There is no doubting the Lions will go into the game in high spirits after last Sunday’s nail-bitting, odd-goal win in Solihull but they will be wary of their largely unknown opposition, who appear to be improving with every game that they play.
The Wild are the result of a newly-built rink in the Cheshire town and they have creamed off the top talent from last season’s now defunct Fylde Flyers side to form the backbone of their roster, this is not a surprise given that ex-Flyers General Manager Mick Caunce and Head Coach Mark Gillingham were both appointed by Widnes at the beginning of the summer.
Gillingham’s team are slowly beginning to find their feet in the Laidler Conference and come into Sunday’s game brimming with confidence after two consecutive away wins, beating Sheffield by a 4-1 scoreline last weekend, before coming back from three goals down to win 6-3 in Hull on Saturday night.
Captain Luke Thomas returns to the Nottingham line-up after serving a one-game suspension, whilst reliable marksman Joe Wightman should be fit to return after missing out last weekend with the flu.
So get yourselves down to the NIC on Sunday evening, for what promises to be a thrilling affair between two in-form teams, who will both be going all-out to keep their winning steaks going.
The Lions experience represents great value for money – ticket prices start from just £2.50 and with no Panthers home game on that day, there really is no better time to come down to roar the boys on to victory, whilst simultaneously supporting grassroots hockey in the city.
